UK Power Networks to pay £1.1m compensation after storms

Compensation payments for households in the Eastern counties left without electricity after the UK storms will cost UK Power Networks more than £1m.

At the height of the storm on Monday 28 October about 300,000 homes in the region lost power.

Customers left without power for more than 48 hours will be paid £54, double the statutory payment, as a “gesture of goodwill “, said the company.

About 13,000 customers will be eligible for compensation totalling £1,134,000.

A further payment of £54 for every 12 hours without power will be paid to those customers still cut off after the initial 48 hour period.

Director of customer services Matt Rudling said: “More than 300,000 customers were affected when gale force winds hit the eastern region on Monday night.
