Keeping the lights on would take up a greater percentage of family income due to the need to continue subsidising renewable energy, and fewer alternative sources from which to produce power.

The alarming conclusions come in papers from the David Hume Institute in ­Edinburgh.

Consumer Focus Scotland says about a third of renewable energy is generated in Scotland, but subsidised by all British consumers, accounting for £37 a year per bill.

The claims will worry voters already facing uncertainty over pension levels in a ­separate Scottish state.
