Hadstone Energy Limited has been given the green light for solar panels on land next to Pillmore Lane, Watchfield, near Highbridge and the M5 motorway.
The proposal will be able to generate enough power to run 2,500 homes a year.
The planning permission allows the site to operate for 25 years before it will be disassembled and the land returned to its current use as farmland for livestock.
The site was chosen due to having high levels of solar irradiance, and close to connections for the national grid.
A statement released in the plans said: “The Watchfield Lawn Solar Farm makes an important contribution to the sustainability of the UK.
“It assists in ensuring that the UK can deliver its legally binding targets for the generation of renewable energy and reducing CO2 emissions, and helps to break the reliance on fossil fuels from less stable regions of the world.
